Cincinnati Microdentistry

Microdentistry is the philosophy and practice of finding and treating decay as early as possible, of removing as little tooth structure as possible, and making the smallest possible restorations (fillings) and of assuring that those restorations are aesthetically pleasing and long lasting. Microdentistry involves the use of magnification and illumination, along with state of the art technologies (Diagnodent by Kavo), to diagnose and treat decay at the earliest possible stage, and to minimize the removal of healthy tissue.
Cavities start out small, but they can quickly become large. This is because once the decay has penetrated through the enamel to the underlying dentin, the decay spreads laterally. Look at the picture of the tooth. It looks like a pretty normal tooth with some stained fissures (grooves). The tooth was then sectioned. Now look at the cross-sectioned tooth and you can see how wide the decay is below the surface that was completely invisible to the naked eye.
By using laser fluorescence (the Diagnodent by Kavo) we are able to locate these areas of decay when they are smaller and easier to treat. If the decay is at a minimum, the fillings will be smaller. Smaller fillings will last longer than bigger fillings.
