A relatively easy and inexpensive way to improve your smile is to whiten your teeth. In fact, you may even be able to do it yourself at home. Although there are differences between at-home and professional whitening, the former can still be effective.
That effectiveness, though, might be dependent on how well you understand what home whitening can do and what it can’t. So before you purchase your kit, here are a few things to know about DIY teeth whitening.
Home kits are safe—when used as directed. Although nothing in life is completely risk-free, home whitening kits are relatively safe. But only if you follow the directions: If you overuse the bleaching solution beyond its intended use, you could wind up with permanent damage to your tooth enamel that can be costly to treat.
Bleaching solutions are relatively mild. Nearly all home kits use carbamide peroxide, a form of hydrogen peroxide, as their bleaching agent. Home kits usually contain no more than 10% of this agent, much lower than professional solutions. Used as directed, this amount of bleaching agent poses little to no risk to dental or general health. On the other hand, the weaker home kit solution does limit the extent of brightness you can achieve compared to stronger professional treatments.
For top results (or certain conditions), consider professional whitening. While you can obtain good results with a home whitening kit, professional whitening provides more precise brightness control and range, and may possibly last longer. That’s because your dentist has more advanced techniques and equipment, as well as stronger bleaching solutions. And, if your discoloration originates inside your teeth, a home kit won’t help—only a dentist can address that kind of discoloration.
Even if you decide to “go solo,” your dentist can still give you advice on what to look for in a home kit, as well as tips for the actual procedure. But whether you whiten at home or let your dentist do it, teeth whitening can take years off your smile and give you a more attractive look.

Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates knows how important it is to present your best face to the world — and one of the most important features of that face is a beaming smile. But there came a point when she noticed something was a little off. “I've always had good teeth, but it seemed to me as I was getting older that they weren't looking as good,” Kathy explained in a recent interview with Dear Doctor magazine.
That's when she decided it was time to take action. Kathy had orthodontic treatment when she was in her fifties, and she keeps her smile bright with tooth whitening treatments. She uses a kit provided by her dentist with a safe, effective whitening solution.
Of course, a bright, healthy smile looks great anywhere — whether you're on the red carpet or “off the grid.” And you don't have to be a Hollywood star to have professional whitening treatments. In fact, teeth whitening is one of the most popular and affordable cosmetic treatments modern dentistry offers.
The basic options for professional teeth whitening include in-office bleaching or take-home kits. Both types of dentist-supervised treatments offer a safe and effective means of getting a brighter smile; the main difference is how long they take to produce results. A single one-hour treatment in the office can make your teeth up to ten shades lighter — a big difference! To get that same lightening with at-home trays, it would take several days. On the plus side, the take-home kit is less expensive, and can achieve the same results in a bit more time.
It's important to note that not all teeth can be whitened with these treatments. Some teeth have intrinsic (internal) stains that aren't affected by external agents like bleaches. Also, teeth that have been restored (with bonding or veneers, for example) generally won't change color. And you can't necessarily whiten your teeth to any degree: Every tooth has a maximum whiteness, and adding more bleach won't lighten it beyond that level. Most people, however, find that teeth whitening treatments produce noticeable and pleasing results.
What about those off-the-shelf kits or in-the-mall kiosks? They might work… or they might not. But one thing's for sure: Without a dentist's supervision, you're on your own. That's the main reason why you should go with a pro if you're considering teeth whitening. We not only ensure that your treatment is safe — we can also give you a realistic idea of what results to expect, and we will make sure that other dental problems aren't keeping you from having a great-looking smile.
How often does Kathy Bates see her dentist for a checkup and cleaning? “I go about every four months,” she noted. “I'm pretty careful about it.” And if you've seen her smile, you can tell that it pays off. Find out some simple solutions in Cincinnati that will enhance the way your smile looks.
Have you been contemplating ways to revamp your appearance? Have thoughts turned to cosmetic dentistry to get a beautiful and more ideal smile? If so, our Cincinnati, OH, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Warren Gase, is here to tell you about two wonderful and easy ways to boost your smile’s appearance.
Do you have chips and cracks in your teeth that make you feel self-conscious? Do you really wish there was an easy way to close that gap between your front teeth without needing braces? If so, our Cincinnati dentist might just have the best option for you: dental veneers. These porcelain coverings are custom-made based on impressions taken of your teeth. Each shell is applied to the front of your teeth using a dental resin to completely alter the shape, evenness, color and size of one or more teeth in your smile.
Before veneers can be applied to your teeth, some enamel will need to be filed off the front of your teeth to make room for your veneers. Since these shells are so very thin, not much enamel will be removed and this tooth preparation can often be done without even requiring local anesthesia. Of course, if the idea of any tooth preparation has you a bit nervous then ask us about no-prep dental veneers, which are even thinner versions of this traditional cosmetic restoration.
Sometimes all you need to get that beautiful smile is to brighten your smile. Years of eating foods and drinks that are dark and cause stains can leave quite a toll on the shade of your teeth over the years. Luckily, professional teeth whitening can erase all those years of consuming stain-causing foods and drinks. Our in-office whitening system boasts the strongest bleaching gel you can get.
When the gel is applied to the teeth and left on for about 15 minutes at a time, it will blast through tough dental stains and get your smile up to eight shades whiter in often just one whitening session. You can also choose to whiten from the comfort of your own home while still using a wonderful and powerful whitening system that we offer. Just ask us if you want to find out which system will be best for tackling your dental stains.
If you are ready to get cosmetic dentistry in Cincinnati, OH, there’s no better time to do it. You could have a beautiful and refreshed smile that you just can’t wait to show off in no time. Schedule your cosmetic consultation today.
Don’t let stains get in the way of having a brighter, younger looking smile. Professional teeth whitening can help.
Have years of drinking coffee or enjoying your evening glass of wine taken a toll on the color of your smile? Do you notice that yellowing and unsightly stains now plague your smile? If so, our Cincinnati, OH dentist, Dr. Warren Gase, has just the answer you’ve been looking for. Our in-office teeth whitening system is ready to give you the results you want.
If you want to get a smile that is several shades whiter in under one hour than it’s time to put down the at-home whitening kit and head in to visit our Cincinnati cosmetic dentist. Many patients notice a significant difference in the shade of their smile after just one session. What makes our system different from commercial whitening systems that you can buy from your local drugstore is that the gel we use has a stronger, higher-concentration of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. This produces a faster and more effective approach than at-home whitening alone.
Most patients are good candidates for professional teeth whitening in Cincinnati if they have stains that are caused by age, consuming certain foods or drinks or even smoking. Stains that are internal and caused by trauma or taking certain medications won’t respond as well to treatment, so you may need to consider another course of action in order to achieve a whiter smile. Our Cincinnati dentist can certainly help!
Of course, we also offer an at-home whitening system, if the idea of spending an hour in our dental chair doesn’t have you jumping for joy. While you won’t be able to achieve the same results right away you will still be able to whiten your smile more effectively in a shorter amount of time than with anything you would be able to find on the market.
Here at our Cincinnati dental office, Dr. Gase is dedicated to giving every patient the smile they want. Whether you want to get a whiter smile or you want to find out if dental implants are right for you give us a call today!
Vanna White has been a household name for the last 27+ years and is best known as the first female co-host of the game show, Wheel of Fortune. She radiates a warm, friendly, down-home appeal and says when describing herself, “what you see is what you get!” While this is quite true, there is so much more to her. She has received a star on the famous Hollywood Walk Of Fame, has starred in an NBC movie and written a book. She is even featured in The Guinness Book of World Records as TV's most frequent clapper, and most recently started her own line of yarn called Vanna's Choice with half of the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. And while any one of these accolades could serve as the highlight of a lifetime for most, for Vanna they fall slightly short. Her favorite job is being mother to her son, Nicholas, and daughter, Giovanna.
The following are excerpts taken from an exclusive interview in Dear Doctor magazine, the premier oral healthcare resource for patients and consumers.
What is the secret to her dazzling smile?
Vanna's oral healthcare routine is the same today as it has been since her childhood — and one everyone can follow. She brushes her teeth at least twice a day (morning and at bedtime) and flosses her teeth daily. She also has strong feelings about flossing. “I think that flossing is the most important thing. I believe that dental floss helps a lot as it keeps your gums strong and looking younger.”
What about bleaching, has she done it?
Absolutely! Vanna bleaches her teeth once or twice a year to help retain her naturally white teeth and to offset any discoloration from coffee and an occasional glass of red wine. “I have done over-the-counter and professional bleaching, but I do like the trays my dentist made because they fit perfectly.” She also states, “Anything you can do professionally is probably better because I would assume that a dentist's ingredients are stronger than over-the-counter products.”
Has she had any cosmetic dentistry?
When it comes to answering a question about cosmetic dentistry, Vanna is just as open and honest as she is about everything else — a trait for which she is known. “I had a bridge put in probably 30 years ago, where I had a tooth pulled and there was a space. And I did have a little tiny chip on one of my front teeth years ago that my dentist fixed. But that is it. Again, I feel very fortunate to have good teeth. The braces [from her childhood] straightened them out and there has been no need for any cosmetics since then.”
Does she do anything to protect her teeth?
While she admits to occasionally forgetting to use her nightguard, a protective mouthguard worn during sleep, she firmly believes in their need. “I do sleep in a nightguard because I grind my teeth. I have a filling in the back that probably has been filled five times from grinding.” She added, “Both of my children do have mouthguards that they wear for their sports.”
